03 / BUYING AN SUV

The bumper, wheelbase and shape of the underside all matter when an SUV meets a sharp change in slope.

A front bumper can touch a ramp before the front wheels start climbing it. Further along, a sharp crest can catch the underside between the axles. The rear may scrape on the way out. An SUV’s ground-clearance figure cannot tell you whether all three parts will clear the entrance to your basement.

Look beyond the lowest point

Ground clearance describes the space beneath the vehicle under the manufacturer’s stated measurement conditions. The distance between the axle centres is the wheelbase; the parts extending beyond them are the overhangs. Shorter overhangs can help at a ramp’s ends, though bumper height also matters. In a simplified side view, a longer wheelbase at the same belly height needs a gentler crest.

The angles in the specification sheet

Mahindra publishes approach, departure and ramp-over angles for the Thar ROXX. The diagram shows what those terms describe. Drivetrain details need a separate check: both Mahindra’s ROXX information and Toyota’s India Hyryder specifications distinguish drive configurations. A tall stance cannot tell you which wheels are driven, and clearance figures cannot establish tyre grip.

When your own ramp looks doubtful

Ask the dealer to assess it before attempting it. Read the exact variant’s manual and the conditions behind its clearance measurements: load and suspension movement can change the space beneath parts of the car. Do not try to discover its limits on kerbs, rocks or unfamiliar slopes. The ROXX and Hyryder photos here show body shape; they do not establish measured angles or capability.

Read these together

Item Look for Why it matters
Clearance Stated load condition Compare like with like
Wheelbase Axle spacing Space over a crest
Overhangs Low front and rear parts Contact at either end
Drive system Exact variant specification Traction is separate

A reading checklist, not a clearance guarantee.

The takeaway

Use the specification sheet to understand the shape, then assess the access route you actually need. No clearance number guarantees that a particular ramp will be safe.

General buying guidance, not an off-road test or a prediction for any particular ramp. Follow the exact vehicle’s manual.
